Theory’s New Home

AR Theory went to her new home today.  Loading in the trailer was relatively uneventful. Basically run the lunge line up through the trailer stand at her hip with little contact on her face.  Just enough to keep her head going into the trailer.  I tapped her on the rear few times to no avail, so went up and placed her front foot in the trailer then pushed her from behind and POP up into the trailer she went.  For being a pretty flighty filly she hauled beautifully and used her head.  Showed some real common sense.  Unloading was scarey for her but she managed to jump out.  We took some old fashioned (throw away camera) registration pics and then put her in with Dr. Darger’s horses.  Later in a couple weeks he is going to put her in her own 20 x 20 pen under his shade barn to start working with her.

We both thought she should bond with his horses first to help her feel like she is part of a herd.  All in all this has been a very rough day for her, but we are confident that she will do fine.  At least she has lots of room to run and is not couped up in a small stall any longer.  Dr. Darger is working with me in terms of if she doesn’t work out he’ll give her back to me or to Simrat so that we can place her in the proper situation.  Also if something comes up that is better than what he can provide she is free to go there.  We’ll figure all of that out come end of June.  In the meantime I’ll get her registration done and other paperwork in order and sometime before I leave for the meeting in June we’ll have her branded with the Akal Ranch brand.  If she fits in at this place then it will be a permanent home.

Here she is not the happiest baby Theory, but she quick, she’ll do fine!

A little bewildered…

A hard lesson as one of the geldings establishes his dominance.

This mare spent a lot of time putting herself between the two geldings and Theory.  We think she may take Theory under her wing.  Will keep you posted.  Dr. Darger is now off to learn all he can about Spanish Mustangs, and of course I sent straight to the SMR website.  I feel pretty badly sending her off like this.  Real bad in fact.  I feel like why was she born to me if she wasn’t going to stay with me.  I’m actually a little sick to my stomach.  But I know her  new home is loving and kind one and that it’s best for her to be able to mingle with horses and have room to run and develop.  I know her, it won’t take her long to impose herself on everyone there and make her presence known.

Little Miss Escape Artist

Thursday, 1. January 2009 16:42

Day before yesterday I spent a good 3 hours messing with the nags.  I walk outside to get Paisano out of his pen to tie him up. The plan is to move the babies from their corral into the his stall so that he could have some turn out time and so that I could keep Theory in the stall while I took Pro for a walk. One of the panels of the corral has wider rails and she likes to crawl through them.  She’d never stay in if I took Pro out of the corral without her.

Anyway, I was heading out there and low and behold guess who is out playing around?  None other than little miss Theory!  I am supposing that Pro was getting too bossy and she decided to squeeze through the rails and leave the scene.  This one is an escape artist.  She has a halter on but she is not halter trained yet.  I can catch her easily enough and rub her all over, but havent been in a hurry to train her.  Most everything she knows she has learned from observation. Luckily she is very connected to Pro so I was able to sneak Paisano out of his stall and around the back side of the house where she couldnt see him to tie him up. Then with Prophecy in tow, of course she ran right up to him, she followed us into Paisano’s stall whereby I promptly took Pro out again (dirty trick) leaving her trapped in the stall.

Okay so now I have Pro in one hand and only one spot to tie up a horse and Paisano is already there. Two wanna be stallions who think they should be sparring with one another only an arms length apart with me in the middle, it was a wee bit interesting for moment. Somehow, I get them switched without a rile and put Paisano in the corral leaving Pro tied up and wondering what just happened.

Yes then Prophecy got a rinse off to get the caked on mud off of him which lasted a day and a half thanks to the second onslot of rain.  We went for a walk and did some lunging. He was really full of himself and we had a bit of discipine going on during the entire walk. He was just wanting to tear around. I felt bad for him.  But we made it home without too much hassle and he got to burry his head in the pellet sack for a bite or two before returning to Theory and the stall.

Now here is where the story begins.

It is around 1:00 in the am when in a dreamy state I hear my room mates horse squeal startling me awake. Thinking to myself who could be out nosing with her,  I squirm in bed wanting to just go back to sleep, but something is nudging at me to go check it out.  She is not kept near my horses.  So I get up and look out the back door and see Paisano sleeping, his “icing” really stands out at night.  I cant really see the babies, but I’m thinking I saw them in their stall, but they are dark and it’s dark, no stars. Supsecting all was well I went back to bed.  Next morning 6:30 ish I decide to go out early to feed and guess what I find?   You guessed it, two very bratty youngsters out of their stall munching on desert scrub.  By the looks of things they had been out all night and had been tearing around the house in a free-for-all making a muddy race track.  They had finished up all the loose hay and most of the pellets in the bag (it was almost empty so no harm done). Pro is such a good boy walked right up to me for some lovins while I wrapped a rope around his yearling studly neck to lead him with Theory in tow back into their stall.  Apparantly little miss Theory had opened the latch. Not only was the stall gate latched, but there was also had a rope tied around it just in case.  She untied the knot. I know it was her because she has been untieing knots since she was very young and has gotten out many times on her own.  Besides, Prophecy has never shown any interest in latches or knots or gizmos.  Also when I tied the rope back on the gate after putting them away, Theory went right over to it and started working on it without hesitation.

There was no harm done they had a good romp  and proved to me that they would stay home and together.  So I may over my Chirstmas holiday let them out again to play while I can watch them.

It’s never boring around here!

Photo Memme

Thursday, 1. January 2009 16:32

Okay Simrat tagged me to play this photo game.  Ooohhh  she has no idea how boring my life will be revealed to be with this game.  What could I possibly have hidden in folder 6.  What could possibly be the 6th photo in folder 6?

Hmmm….

2008aprcora61

Story goes like this…  Cora came to live with me on  lease for a year to give birth to Theory a gorgeous bay filly sired by Paisano.  Cora was to receive gait training in trade for the foal. I had high hopes to ride Cora in an open breed gaited show class, but her pregnancy got in the way of that, well that and because the only shows scheduled didn’t fit our time slot for the lease.  The above picture was taken from a video that my friend Kristy made of me working with Cora. I am backing Cora off her speed actually into a half hault to engage her rear end and lighten her front end.  Cora really didn’t like lifting her front end much.  The reason the picture is so funny looking is because it is a screenshot of a still from the video.

Here is another one from the same video but photoshopped to look like a photo.

This is how we ended the day… a snap shot…

coraevanapr2008a

That would be Evan my friend Kristy’s son being Chirstened with his first horse back ride.  Cora was a  gem that day.

How to play Photo Meme:

1) Go to your photo album

2) Pick the 6th folder you come to

3) Pick the 6th picture in that folder

4) Tell your story about the photo

5) Tag five other people by leaving a comment on their blogs to encourage them do the same in their blogs.

Have fun!!

Prophecy – 11 Months Old

Thursday, 1. January 2009 16:09

Okay he isnt quite 11 months old. Give him 6 more days and he will be.  I usually dont share pics of my yearling colts. But since I am no longer breeding and promoting a stud I guess it wont hurt to share how Pro is developing.

Here he is…
